Experienced minimal decrease in Burglaries and 1.5% decrease in Part I Crimes during October of 1999 compared to October of 1998

The reduction of both Part I Crimes and Burglaries experienced in the spring and summer of 1999 are continuing into the fall. The overall statistical data obtained from all of the Public Housing Developments showed a 28 percent reduction in Part I Crimes and a 38.3 percent reduction in Burglaries. The statistical data year to date for 1999 is being compared to the same time period in 1998.

Calls for service, citizens notifying the police department, have increased 31 percent correlating with the citizens taking an active role to contact the police department when they note suspicious and or criminal activity. This also provides officers to frequently visit the residents and actively participating in problem solving.

The officers assigned to the Public Housing Unit continue to be dedicated to the residents of the various developments, Fort Myers Housing Authority and the goals and vision of the Public Housing Unit and the Fort Myers Police Department. The decrease in criminal activity is directly related to these partnerships that have been established and grown over the past several years.

By now we are sure that the staff and residents have witnesses the impact of the Youth Protection Ordinance initiated in late September 1999. The Youth Protection Ordinance guidelines prohibit anyone under the age of 18 years old to be in a public place:

The Ordinance is in effect from Sunday through Thursday 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Friday and Saturday and all legal holidays the Ordinance is in effect from 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Any student suspended or expelled from school may not be in a public place on school days between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The first violation is a written warning and can be followed up with the issuance of a trespass warning.

The second violation is a civil infraction $50.00 fine

The third violation is civil infraction $100.00 fine, subsequent infractions are up to $250.00 fine.

Parents are also held accountable and can be issued a violation with subsequent fines

The officers within the Public Housing Unit have issued 38 written warnings. No second violations have been issued thus far.

We would encourage the citizens within the Public Housing Developments to notify the police department if they observe suspicious and or criminal activity, to include youths in violation of the Youth Protection Ordinance at 334-4155, emergencies dial 911.
