Course Descriptions, Sixth Grade

CORE ACADEMIC SUBJECTS

Language Arts
Language Arts 1, Advanced
The purpose of this course is to provide integrated experiences in reading, writing, listening, viewing, speaking, language, and literature. Students will learn how to use effective vocabulary, read and identify different literary selections, write for a variety of purposes and audiences, and use listening, viewing, and speaking skills to obtain and convey information and ideas.
 
Math
Math 1, Advanced
Students continue the development of mathematical concepts and processes that can be used to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Course content will include structure and properties of numbers, number theory, measurement techniques, geometric concepts, statistical methods, introduction to probability, and algebraic thinking.
 
Science
Comprehensive Science 1, Advanced
This course provides opportunities to study concepts of the life, earth/space, and physical sciences and their applications to everyday life. Course content will include the nature of science, the nature of matter, energy, force and motion, earth and space, processes of life, environment, and ecosystems.
 
Social Studies
World Geography and History (Africa, Asia and Pacific), Advanced
Students develop a multicultural understanding and use geography concepts and skills. The content includes world political regions in terms of location, environment, population and culture, historical change, economics, and land use.

ELECTIVES

Art
Exploring Art
Students will be exposed to a wide variety of two- and three-dimensional art techniques each quarter of the school year. First quarter will include painting and drawing; second quarter, printmaking and embossing; third quarter, pottery and sculpture; and fourth quarter, architecture and three-dimensional design.
 
Computer Education
Computer Technology
In this course students will learn the principles, concepts, and processes of computer hardware and software, as well as practical applications. Students will get experience in operating word processing, database, and spreadsheet software, using computer graphics, and using the Internet for research.
 
Health
Health
This course will address age-appropriate hygiene, wellness, fitness, and sex education for students.
 
Library Media
Communications
This course will provide opportunities for practical experience in the production of multimedia materials. Students will learn techniques and skills in using multimedia formats for academic and creative expression. As part of this class, students will produce the daily Sea-TV broadcast for The Sanibel School.
 
Study Skills
The purpose of this course is to provide students with opportunities to experience success in school and enhance attitudes toward learning by teaching methods of studying, research, time management, and individual responsibility.
 
Music
Exploring Music
Students will have an opportunity to learn the basic skills of reading music for singing and playing musical instruments. The first semester will include recorders and a vocal ensemble, while the second semester will focus on drums and a percussion ensemble.
 
Odyssey of the Mind
Students learn creative and problem-solving skills and critical thinking. The class includes an annual competition in which students work with others in solving a particular problem.
 
Physical Education
Physical Education and Fitness
This course incorporates a variety of activities and equipment to physically challenge the students. First semester will focus on lifetime sports, including tennis, golf, weight training, aerobics (dance/running), and archery. Second semester will focus on team sports, such as flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, and hockey.
 
New Games
Students learn team building and leadership skills through a variety of physical and mental challenges.
