San Gimignano

San Gimignano

In 1200 AD San Gimignano was a rich commercial place. Its wealthy merchants built towers next to their houses, and had competitions to decide on who had built the highest. In 1282 there were 72 of these towers. Today San Gimignano is an outstanding and minuscule example of Medieval town planning with its towers and ancient surroundings.
