The above view belies the fact that there is very little beachfront real estate in Sorrento. The high position the town occupies above the sea provides some of the most panoramic viewing in the region. Sorrento was famous as an elite resort community even in the time of the Romans. Its picturesque bays, beaches and harbour can only be reached by steps and narrow alleys. In the "Odyssey" Homer refers to the Sorrento as the mythical singing mermaids that enchanted the travelers in this romantic spot.
