Because of its preserved structures and solemn churches, Paestum is one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Italy. These ruins include four majestic and well-preserved temples and other religious buildings. The temples of Hera, Neptune, Ceres, and Athena date back to about 500 B.C. Many statues and artifacts remain from that era. The Tomb of the Diver, dating back to 480 B.C. is decorated on its interior with a naked youth diving into a pond from a diving board, thus its name.
